The book begins with the story of how Raymond Dart, an expert in the physical structure of humans, put aside his duties as a best man one day in 1924 to examine a tiny prehuman skull brought to him before the wedding. The anecdote is followed by an explanation of evolution, with insights into Darwin’s theories. This is just the introduction, and readers may already find themselves wading in the weeds. The information stays quite dense through a discussion of primate evolution, the split between apes and humans, Lucy and her kin, and an investigation into what comprises a human. Stefoff enlivens the text with subjects like the giant ape, who may have been the kernel of Bigfoot tales. With many color photos, the attractive format goes a long way toward easing the reader into the topic. Still, this looks simpler than it is, and will be best used by students who already have an interest in the topic. Grades 6-9. --Ilene Cooper
