Enciclopedia
Encyclopedia of Global Warming Set - Steven I. Dutch, 1248 Pages
Designed for high-school and undergraduate students, Encyclopedia of Global Warming brings together 540 original essays on topics related to climate change. The essays range in length from 400 to 2,000 words and provide overviews or explain terms, organizations, individuals, and laws and treaties. Of particular interest are the “Top-Twenty Emitter” essays, with information on each of the 20 nations with the highest annual greenhouse gas emissions. Essays within each type generally have a consistent format, and all of them clearly explain why the topic matters in a global-warming context. Most essays on laws and treaties, for example, offer the place and date of ratification and a list of participating nations, followed by sections providing background and a summary of provisions as well as “Significance for Climate Change.” Biographical profiles start with vital statistics, followed by sections on the person’s life and climate work. Every essay longer than 400 words ends with a further-reading list. Appendixes include a “Biographical Dictionary of Key Figures in Global Warming” (some of which are also the subjects of essays), “Popular Culture about Global Warming” (an annotated list of fiction and films), a time line, a glossary, a general bibliography, and a list of Web sites. All three volumes contain the table of contents; list of tables, maps, and sidebars; and categorized contents list. Volume 3 concludes with a subject index. The small number of black-and-white photographs add little to the set. Although there are other reference materials on global warming, the formatting and the emphasis on context make this encyclopedia particularly suitable for students, and it is recommended for high-school, public, and college libraries. Purchase of one copy comes with free access to the online version through Salem Science. --Mary Ellen Quinn
